“The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame and its Board of Trustees are deeply saddened by the death of George Steinbrenner. Mr. Steinbrenner was a great sportsman and a stalwart supporter of the Racing Museum. He was committed and dedicated to the sport of Thoroughbred racing and had a passion for his horses. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Steinbrenner family.”
Steinbrenner, 80, died of a heart attack in Tampa, Fla., on Tuesday. He was the owner of the New York Yankees and an owner and breeder of racehorses. His most notable horses included Majestic Warrior, who won the Hopeful Stakes in 2007, and Bellamy Road, the favorite in the 2005 Kentucky Derby. Steinbrenner bred horses in Florida at his 750-acre Kinsman Stud. He usually kept approximately 25 horses in training and had about 35 mares at Kinsman. Steinbrenner also served as a New York Racing Association Board Member.
